5 Leadership Habits for New Leaders

What makes a leader successful? And maybe more importantly, what does a new leader need to know to become successful?

As you build your leadership skills, you’ll want others to see you as a leader. To give the impression that you are a leader, it makes sense to adopt the habits of successful leaders or leaders you admire.

So what are these leadership habits that good leaders exhibit? What are the qualities that you need to emulate to present yourself as a leader?

We’ve researched some of the top leaders and have assembled this list of leadership habits you need to cultivate as a new or growing leader.

1.  Be Different

Many people and companies find comfort in jumping on the bandwagon. After some time, you can scarcely tell the difference between companies as they all present themselves in the same manner. There is perceived safety in doing what others are doing.

As a leader, there are times when you need to have the courage to be contrarian or different. You need to think twice before jumping on the bandwagon. Think about how you want to present yourself or your company and differentiate yourself from others. This means that you may have to challenge the status quo.

2.  Focus on Communication

You’ve heard us say this before, but we cannot say it enough. One habit that leaders must cultivate is being good at effective communication. We need you to master business communication and the art of presenting yourself.

One of the biggest tips is to ensure that you know how to lead by using collaborative rather than dictatorial language. Are you more likely to ask, “Could you look into this?” Or do you typically tell someone to “Do this!” The difference is subtle, but the impact on your ability to lead effectively could be huge.

Remember to use communication as a means of showcasing your leadership.

3.  Appreciate Feedback

This continues with where we left off in the previous tip. Part of effective communication is to learn how to give feedback effectively.

But a good leader also knows how to receive feedback with as much appreciation. You need to be open to hearing criticism and negative feedback from your team and even your customers. You can start by having regular meetings where you ask your staff, peers, or customers to be open with how they feel about your services and/or your leadership. You can also provide feedback in the same meetings. This can seem like a daunting task at first, but once you master the art of appreciating feedback, you’ll see yourself and others continue to grow and improve.

4. Working with Others

A great leader needs to learn when and how to work with others. Make sure you learn to listen to others and to recognize the strengths that others have which you don’t.

As a great leader, you should be confident enough to approach your team and tell them that you need help with something. You need to know how to delegate tasks to your team members based on their individual skills. You also need to be able to work collaboratively to get things done.

The need to work with others may seem like an obvious habit for leaders, but it is essential to continue improving this skill as you progress in your leadership journey.

5.  Recognizing Talent

If there’s been a theme throughout this article, it has been knowing how to cultivate the best from a team. A good leader can only succeed if they have the right talent to back them up, and this is supported by recognizing great talent around them.

Learning how to recognize talent is something that the best leaders do well. This means learning how to identify if a team member not only has the skills you need but also has the right attitude or cultural fit for your company.

Now that you know the best leadership habits to cultivate, we look forward to seeing you develop as a leader.
